Collegiate School Kindergarten Curriculum

Collegiate School’s Kindergarten program provides a strong academic foundation while supporting each child’s social, emotional, and physical development. Through small-class instruction and individualized support, students build the skills and confidence needed for continued academic success.

Listening & Speaking Skills

Students will develop the ability to:

  • Express ideas and experiences clearly
  • Participate appropriately in group discussions
  • Listen attentively while others are speaking
  • Listen to stories and answer questions about key details
  • Remember and retell familiar stories
  • Follow oral directions
  • Speak clearly and communicate needs appropriately

Reading Readiness

Students will work toward:

  • Recognizing uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Matching letters with their corresponding sounds
  • Identifying beginning and ending sounds
  • Blending letter sounds to read simple words
  • Recognizing grade-appropriate sight words
  • Using phonics strategies to decode unfamiliar words
  • Reading simple words and sentences with increasing fluency
  • Demonstrating basic comprehension of stories and informational text

Writing Readiness

Students will develop beginning writing skills including:

  • Tracing, cutting, and coloring while observing guidelines
  • Printing their first and last name using appropriate capitalization
  • Printing uppercase and lowercase letters with reasonable skill
  • Proper pencil grip and letter formation
  • Writing numerals
  • Spelling basic words using phonics strategies
  • Writing simple words and beginning sentences
  • Using pictures and words to communicate ideas

Mathematics

Students will develop foundational mathematical skills including:

  • Identifying and writing numerals
  • Understanding number values
  • Counting by rote
  • Counting objects accurately
  • Comparing quantities
  • Identifying basic shapes
  • Understanding position words such as above, below, beside, behind, and in front

Our Kindergarten Approach

Our Kindergarten curriculum combines traditional foundational academics with small-class instruction and attention to each student’s individual learning needs. Students are encouraged to work at an appropriate pace while developing the academic skills, independence, confidence, and classroom habits necessary for a successful transition into First Grade.

Upper School Curriculum Requirements

As a college preparatory school, Collegiate prides itself in having a challenging curriculum. Students are required to have 4 years of Science, 4 years of Math, 4 years of English, 4 years of History, 3 years of foreign language, and 4 years of physical education. 

  • Science Courses:
    Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Biology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics I, Physics II
  • Math Courses:
    Geometry, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, SAT math 
  • AP Preparation for Math and English is built into the curriculum,
  • Community service is required for Juniors and Seniors.

Creating a well-rounded, mature individual is our goal.
